There are three proposed utility scale solar facilities awaiting permitting in Montezuma County.

Canyonland Solar

Canyonland Solar was proposed to be built 10 miles northwest of Cortez, CO, on productive dryland farmland, surrounded on three sides by Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and Hovenweep National Monument.. Properties under contract are between Roads P to T and 16 to 18. See more in our blog articles.

Valley Range Energy Park

This proposed facility is situated east of Cortez, south of the county fairgrounds and north of Road H. It has not been brought before county officials as of March 2026. See more in our blog section.

Sunbear Solar

Sunbear is a proposed 756MW project and could be one of the largest in the US. It could be built on Ute Mountain Ute Tribe sovereign land south of Towaoc. Neither the permitting process or operation, if it were approved, would  involve Montezuma County officials. See more in our blog articles.
