For Montezuma County
It indicates the serious wildfire conditions present in the county, and lines up with related water concerns. When has this ever been an issue this early in the year before? The commissioners are not the only ones discussing the 2026 wildfire outlook. Farmers, ranchers, firemen, MVI, DWCD,: if you can think of a water user, the subject is discussed.
Though a burning ban was not imposed in February, this subject will be visited at the Coffee with the County on March 9. To get ahead of worsening conditions, it was recommended that residents who have burn piles clean up before a ban takes effect. Be sure to call dispatch ahead of time - - they will know what conditions are expected and whether it is safe to burn.
Ask a fire marshal or a fire chief or one of our volunteer firefighters how they feel about fighting a fire at or near a utility scale solar facility. "Working closely with the local fire stations" as project proposals are written, is not the same as being prepared for an actual event. Preparedness is on the minds of all residents early this year.
Constructing a solar facility during the present conditions can only complicate the outlook for the year. We find that possibility extremely unsettling.
